The Art of Taking Notes You'll Actually Reread

We've all done it — opened a notes app mid-meeting, typed furiously for ten minutes, and never looked at that page again. Taking notes is easy. Taking notes you'll actually reread is a different skill entirely.

Write for future-you, not present-you

When you're in the middle of a lecture or a meeting, everything feels obvious. It won't feel obvious in three weeks. The fix is simple: end every note with a one-line summary at the top, written as if you're explaining it to someone who wasn't in the room.

In Calendria, we default every new note to a title + summary layout for exactly this reason. It takes ten extra seconds and saves you from re-reading a wall of text later.

Tag once, search forever

Folders force you to decide where a note belongs before you understand what it's about. Tags let you decide later — and let a single note live in multiple contexts. A note titled "Q3 budget notes" can carry both #work and #finance tags without needing two copies.

The habit that matters most isn't the tool — it's the five-minute weekly review. Skim your last week of notes, delete what's dead, tag what's alive. That's the whole system.
